Your image will affect your personal, professional and public life. For right or wrong people make decision based on what they see. In just a few seconds they form opinions about your background, education, social status, intelligence and even your ability to do a job. Many of those decision may be incorrect but it may take several interactions to change those beliefs and often in our careers we are not given a second chance to make a first impression.
Your professional image needs to be appropriate for the industry and environment you work in, the organisation you work for and the job role you have. If you work in the media then smart casual dress may be the norm, but you will find a more formal ‘suited’ approach to the legal or banking professions and your casual appearance will be frowned upon. Clothes and grooming are part of your packaging and speak volumes about you, your values and personal brand. Why would a company employ someone who doesn’t take a pride in their appearance? Well quite simply because the assumption is that they will not take a pride in their work either.
Business owners and executives need to take control of their executive image focusing on strong visual aesthetics and careful packaging. Put simply if you want people to take a real interest in who you are and what you have to say and offer, make sure your appearance and presentation is always appropriate.
